Luckily, there are plenty of alternatives these days! One of my favorites is jumbo shells, as they have a lot of uses. These jumbo shells, called conchiglioni, are pretty versatile. They will come in handy for your next dinner party, holiday meal, or family dinner.

The food industry has been quick to accommodate and adapt production to make gluten-free products that mimic the bread, pasta, and pastries that many of us have had to give up. Just because you can no longer eat gluten doesn’t mean that you can’t have a heaping plate of pasta. 

Most major pasta companies and grocery food chains make gluten-free pasta using numerous starchy substitutes that are safe for gluten intolerant individuals to enjoy. Here, we will look at gluten-free pasta shells as a prime example of how necessity is the mother of invention. 

When growing cases of gluten intolerance required large numbers of people to adopt a gluten-free diet, pasta companies rose to the challenge. They created gluten-free options of practically every pasta shape, including shells!

What Ingredients are Used in Making Gluten-Free Jumbo Shells?

Gluten-free jumbo shells use one or more starchy simple ingredients that combine to create a similar texture to wheat pasta. Ingredients may include:

Does Whole Foods Have Gluten-Free Jumbo Pasta Shells?

At the moment of writing this post, there were no gluten-free jumbo pasta brands sold at Whole Foods. They do have the small kind of shells and other gluten-free pasta, but no the jumbo shells.

Does Wegmans Have Gluten-Free Jumbo Shells?

If you live in the East or Northeast, you can find gluten-free pasta at your local Wegmans grocery store, but they do not carry jumbo shells. They carry small pasta shells from brands such as Annies, Ancient Harvest, Tinkyada, and their own Wegman’s Gluten-free line.  

Does Barilla make Gluten-free Jumbo Shells?

Though Barilla does offer a gluten-free line of pasta, it does not sell jumbo pasta shells.

Barilla is one of the leading pasta companies and major suppliers of pasta in the U.S. and internationally. They have an entire line of gluten-free pasta types, including spaghetti, penne, elbows, rotini, fettuccine, and lasagna noodles. 

While you may not see jumbo shells on this list, there are still many pasta dishes you can make with these gluten-free options.

If you had your heart set on stuffed pasta, lasagna would be the closest option to a stuffed shell.

You could even create a semblance of stuffed manicotti by rolling the lasagna noodles into a large cylinder that you can stuff with meat, ricotta, or a vegetable mixture.

Barilla gluten-free pasta uses a mixture of corn and brown rice flour and is surprisingly similar in taste and texture to their original wheat pasta. 

How Long Should You Cook Gluten-Free Jumbo Shells?

Gluten-free jumbo shells take between 7 and 8 minutes to cook in salted, boiling water. Every brand has cooking instructions printed clearly on the box the shells come in or on the manufacturer’s website.
