The second way I often do is to go directly to the manufacturer’s site and contact them. These websites usually have a phone number, email, or chat service to contact and ask if their lipstick contains Gluten. They won’t risk lying to you.
Why do makeup companies use Gluten in Lipstick?
The number one reason why companies use Gluten in their lipstick is to provide a better, smoother, silkier texture.
Like the way gluten is used in food, gluten-based additives are used as binders, which also provide additional moisture. Wheat ingredients are cheap and easy to come by, unlike the alternatives used in gluten-free products. Hence most of the time, gluten-free lipstick or gluten-free products, in general, are more expensive.
