If you’re looking for gluten-free nail polish, this list is all for you.
You may be wondering why anyone with Celiac Disease may want gluten-free nail polish. Some people react to topical gluten-containing products, so gluten-free on the skin is necessary.
Does nail polish have gluten?
Many nail polishes have hydrolyzed wheat protein, which contains gluten, as part of the ingredients to help with nail hardening and quickly moisturize soft, thin nails. There are gluten-free and certified gluten-free options available, though.
Hydrolyzed wheat protein is not gluten-free. Medical experts say gluten protein is too large a molecule to be absorbed through the skin or your fingernails. If you do not bite or lick your nails, you should be OK to use nail polish.
But, If you do happen to bite your nails, there is a chance that you could swallow some of the nail polish. The amount of gluten you would consume would probably be minimal.
The Center for Celiac Research director at the University of Maryland, Alessio Fasano, MD, recommends not using nail polish if you bite your nails.
If you don’t want to use any cosmetics containing gluten to avoid accidentally ingesting it, I hope this list is helpful to you.
